ExpressVPN: Is It Worth It for a First-Time VPN User?

Choosing a first VPN is harder than it should be. Every provider markets itself as the fastest, most secure, and most private option available. ExpressVPN is one of the most frequently recommended services, but it is also one of the most expensive in the category. Before subscribing, looking at a clear breakdown of expressvpn pros and cons helps set realistic expectations for what the cost buys you and whether cheaper alternatives would serve you equally well.

    What ExpressVPN Is

ExpressVPN has operated as a commercial VPN service since 2009 and is registered in the British Virgin Islands, which places it outside the EU and Five Eyes surveillance agreements. The service uses AES-256 encryption, supports multiple VPN protocols including its proprietary Lightspeed protocol built on WireGuard, and operates a verified no-logs policy that has been independently audited multiple times. It currently supports up to eight simultaneous device connections per account.

    Where ExpressVPN Performs Well

Speed is the area where ExpressVPN consistently outperforms most competitors. The Lightspeed protocol delivers fast connection speeds on both nearby and geographically distant servers, which matters if you are connecting to servers in other countries for streaming or remote work. Users who have switched from slower VPNs frequently note that ExpressVPN does not produce the noticeable slowdown that made previous services frustrating to use daily.

Streaming access is a second strong point. ExpressVPN maintains reliable access to major platforms including BBC iPlayer, US Netflix, Disney Plus, and Amazon Prime Video across most of its server locations. Streaming services actively block VPN IP addresses, and no provider guarantees permanent access, but ExpressVPN is consistently quicker than most competitors to restore working access after a block.

Ease of use is deliberately prioritised throughout the product. Apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux are straightforward and require minimal configuration. A single-click connection is the default experience. For a first-time VPN user who has no intention of managing settings or protocols manually, this is a genuine practical advantage over providers that assume technical familiarity.

    Where ExpressVPN Has Weaknesses

Price is the most significant weakness and the one most relevant to new users evaluating the service. On a monthly plan, ExpressVPN costs between 10 and 13 pounds. On an annual plan, the cost sits at roughly 6 to 8 pounds per month, which remains higher than competitors like Surfshark or NordVPN that deliver comparable core performance at a lower price point. For users whose primary concern is value rather than premium speed, this is a real consideration.

The device connection limit is also worth noting. Eight simultaneous connections is adequate for most individuals but limiting for households or users covering every device they own. Surfshark and some other providers offer unlimited simultaneous connections at a lower price, which changes the value calculation for multi-device users.

    The Ownership Question

In 2021, Kape Technologies acquired ExpressVPN. Kape has a prior history of owning adware-related companies, which raised concern in the privacy community at the time of the announcement. Since the acquisition, ExpressVPN has maintained its no-logs policy, continued independent auditing, and there has been no documented change in privacy practices or user data handling. The ownership change is a known fact worth considering in the context of a privacy product, though there is no evidence to date of it affecting the service.

    Who Should Consider ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is a strong match for users who prioritise speed and ease of use and are willing to pay a premium for both. It works well for frequent travellers, remote workers who access business platforms from different countries, and users who want reliable streaming access from abroad. The setup process is genuinely accessible to non-technical users, which makes it a reasonable first VPN for someone who wants a service that works without configuration.

Users whose primary driver is cost will find better value elsewhere. Surfshark and NordVPN both deliver most of what ExpressVPN provides at a lower price on long-term plans. Users with strong privacy concerns about corporate ownership may prefer Mullvad or ProtonVPN, both of which operate as independent privacy-focused companies with different ownership structures.

ExpressVPN is not the cheapest and it is not without caveats. It is a well-built, reliable product with a long track record. For a first-time user who wants something that works immediately and does not require research to configure, the premium is partly justified by the reduction in friction.
